Organ donor awareness
Part of the Association’s mission is to raise the issue of organ and tissue donor awareness, and to this end nineteen attended Rotorua in early May 2008 to take part in the annual Rotorua Marathon, which also has 5km and 10km events on the same day.
Many thousands enter these races every year and we therefore took the opportunity to wear striking red tee shirts with the message ‘LIVING PROOF ORGAN DONATION WORKS’.
All traveled to Rotorua on the Friday and many met up for an evening meal, with a popular dish being a pasta feast to charge up the energy!
It was a crisp sunny autumn morning as the team congregated for a photo and warmed up before the starter’s pistol. As we passed the starting line we split into two’s or three’s to maximize the publicity we set out to achieve. All completed the 10km walk in less than two hours, and many were greeted by the public announcer as they neared the finishing line.
